A Day of Mixed Emotions: Celebrating Mam Gumbi

Today marked the final day at Manzolwandle Primary School for our beloved educator, Mam Gumbi, as she begins her well-deserved retirement. She joined Manzolwandle approximately 16 years ago through a transfer from Stanger, and from the very first day she arrived, she brought something special โ€” a deep love for teaching, an unwavering passion for Mathematics and Science, and a caring heart for every learner. Mam Gumbi worked with dedication and purpose, always pushing learners to believe in themselves, to try again, and to never fear a difficult problem. Her classroom was a place of learning, discipline, and encouragement โ€” but it was also a place where children felt safe and valued.

Beyond academics, Mam Gumbi was also a proud supporter of our cultural life. She played an active role in cultural activities and taught learners Zulu dance with energy and pride, ensuring that our children celebrated who they are and where they come from. For many learners, these moments of dance and culture became memories they will carry for life. And for staff members, Mam Gumbi was more than a colleague โ€” she was a joy to be around: funny, warm, and full of laughter. Teachers will forever remember her jokes, her quick humour, and the way she could turn a stressful day into a lighter one with one sentence and a smile.

Today we celebrated her career with gratitude โ€” but we also felt the pain of letting her go. The school was filled with mixed emotions: smiles, applause, hugsโ€ฆ and tears.

As the day unfolded, it became clear how deeply Mam Gumbi is loved. Many teachers were emotional, knowing that the corridors will feel different without her. Her Grade 4 Maths learners were especially moved โ€” some were in tears, holding onto the reality that they would not see her in class again. Learners took their turns to say goodbye in the most beautiful way they knew: through music and dance performances prepared especially for her. Every song, every step, and every clap was a message that said: โ€œThank you, Mam Gumbi. You made a difference.โ€

To Mam Gumbi, we say: thank you for your love, your patience, your dedication, and your brilliant service to our school. Thank you for teaching with passion, for shaping young minds, and for bringing light and laughter to our staffroom. As you step into this new chapter, we wish you all the best โ€” may your retirement be filled with joy, good health, and well-deserved rest. You will always remain part of the Manzolwandle family.
